Similar to propeller fans.

Construction
They were designed for use without a housing other than the wall or partition into which they were installed. At the center of the wheel forming the hub, a conoidal casting guided the entering air to the blades, thus avoiding friction losses due to sudden change of direction. Attached to this casting was a steel plate back plate which the curved blades were attached.
